Plasterers Job Overview

Plasterers apply plaster to interior walls and ceilings to form fire-resistant and relatively soundproof surfaces. They also apply plaster to veneer over drywall to create smooth or textured abrasion-resistant finishes. They apply durable plasters such as polymer-based acrylic finishes and stucco to exterior surfaces, and they install prefabricated exterior insulation systems over existing walls for good insulation and interesting architectural effects. In addition, they cast ornamental designs in plaster.

Must be at least 18 years old; must present birth certificate; must have a high school diploma or a G.E.D. certificate; must have valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation; must be a legal resident of the United States; and must be able to speak, read and write the English language.

The apprenticeship program runs three to four years. Plasterers require approximately 144 classroom hours per year, 1,200 work hours.

Mathematics, mechanical drawing, science and Industrial Technology classes.

Plasterers work inside and out. Work may be somewhat seasonal. Workers must bend and kneel a lot.

Must be able to lift heavy objects; must be able to work at high levels from ladders and scaffolds; must be able to handle a large amount of bending and stretching.

Apprentices start at 60 percent of Wage Scale:

  • $30.30/hr Base Wage, plus
  • $9.00/hr Health and Welfare, Plus
  • $19.18/hr Annuity and Pension
